I'll be glad to speak with you about where you are and whether working with me may be helpful — even if we decide you can get better support somewhere else.
The Details
The relationship is the client.
Unique people make unique relationships. My client is the relationship — and it is the relationship I take the side of.
Both partners come together
Sessions are done with all parties in the room. I do not meet with clients separately. The only exception is if you request, before our initial session, to meet separately — in which case I will meet with both separately, and the third meeting will be all together. After which, all future sessions will always require all parties.
Sessions are 55 minutes
The fee is $145 — I do not charge more than I do for individuals. An hour is often enough, though for some couples I may suggest a longer session length for many possible reasons.
I am not here to decide who is right
It is uncommon — though not impossible — for me to act as a judge over someone's actions within your relationship. I am not half as interested in right and wrong as I am in what disconnect is leading to the division, and what other options either of you might want or prefer.
There is no script
Homework and worksheets may be helpful, but you can get those in many places now. My work is about changing movements of being with each other. I am not an armchair therapist and most couples report that I "get" both of them regardless of personality, gender, or culture — you might be surprised :-)
Change takes time
Your relationship patterns were created over time. They loosen slowly. Long lasting change comes from being different, not just thinking differently — the deeper the change needed, the longer it takes and the more rewarding the result. Always.
Payment at each session
Cash, check, cards, or digital. I can provide a superbill if your plan has out-of-network benefits. See the Rates page.
Questions
Common questions people ask me.
These come up often. If you have something else on your mind, ask when you reach out.
No. One person is welcome to be reluctant — or both can be. Resistance to therapy is not an issue for me, but it may slow things down. Without trust, change is difficult.
Yes. Some couples come because of difficulties and challenges. Others come because they want to more deeply understand their partner. Some because they want to train strong now to secure a stronger future.
Therapy and mental health is very similar to the body. Sometimes you tore something and need surgery, sometimes just a Physical Therapist for retraining patterns. Sometimes just massage to loosen and improve quality of life. And sometimes a trainer so that when it's time to do some heavy lifting — you are ready to do it together.
Great — this is common. Individual therapy often leads to couples therapy and vice versa. Individual change demands relationship change, and if you change your relationship you will both be given the opportunity to change yourself. This is one of the advantages of depth-oriented work.
There are times you or I may ask to speak with the other therapist — this will never be done without your consent, and only if you yourself believe it to be a helpful and wanted conversation. I'm here as a resource.
Most plans do not cover couples therapy. I am out of network. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill. Call them first to check.
There is no standard. Some couples find what they came for in six months. Others stay longer because the work keeps opening something useful. It depends on what you are working with and what you both want out of therapy. I will tell you what I believe as we go — I am very upfront and honest.
I do not talk about clients in my personal life. Even receiving consult — which I will do with other professionals such as body workers or therapists with specialties — I will never mention any information that can identify you in any way.
